Australia Day commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet in Sydney Cove, NSW, on 26 January, 1788, under the leadership of Captain Arthur Phillip.
Captain Phillip was commissioned by the British Home Secretary, Viscount Sydney, to Proclaim a Brittish Settlement in Eastern Australia.
Australia Day is now celebrated as a multi-cultural event with a broad range of celebrations in a country of 20 million people that is very much dependent on the fascinating cultures of the people who have come to make Australia their home.
