Max Wideman has a Special Affiliation Agreement with Tom Mochal, President of TenStep, Inc. Max is particularly impressed with Tom's work on developing a practical project management methodology. The methodology is simple, scalable and straightforward - something that is sorely needed in the PM domain.

Project management tip of the month

The planned objective principle: You can waste a lot of time producing a good plan for the wrong objective.

New information added monthly

December 2008 - In our Guest paper, Thomas B. Clark provides detailed listings of the Requirements of the Project Management Office, including Concept, Purposes, Responsibilities and Solution. In Papers we review Bennet P. Lientz & Lee Larssen's book: Risk Management for IT Projects: How to Deal with Over 150 Issues and Risks in IT projects. This is a useful reference for identifying, tracking and handling those risks that most closely match your own particular situation. Our Musings reports briefly how a Study Demonstrates Cultural Differences, its affect on the way we communicate and how North Americans may be at a disadvantage in multicultural teams.

November 2008 - For our Paper this month, we review Dhanu M. Kothari's book Rainbows & Ratholes. An unusual title perhaps, but it is really about Best Practices for Managing Successful Projects. An ever popular and open question, our Guest Greta Blash, Senior Instructor for International Institute for Learning, joins us in providing good advice on practitioners' Project Management Career Path. In Musings we exchange Emails with Diane Johnson, speaking on behalf of ESI International, on the Top Ten Trends in Project Management for 2008.

October 2008 - Our Guests, co-authors Bob McMurray and Steve Chamberlin emphasize Prioritization and Scheduling Based on Value for projects in a portfolio. And Guest, Ron Leduc provides a valuable but fictitious economic development case study: Wellington County Recreational Complex. For our Musings we recount Peter Halas's amusing body-management allegory to explain Corporate Governance and Project Teamwork in IT projects and how they can quickly get out of control.

Are you in charge of a project portfolio management office? Do you really know what reports are required by whom? Three new Issacons this month fill important gaps in our understanding of project portfolio management: 1004c7 Ongoing PPM Reporting - Pt A (What reports are needed by the different management stakeholders); 1004c8 Ongoing PPM Reporting - Pt B (What reports are needed by the PPMO in the PPM system); and 1004c9 Project Portfolio Management: Managing Strategic Risk.

Helpful information for people in a hurry

It is not for me to tell you how to run your project — that's your decision. Nor am I trying to teach you about project management — there are plenty of excellent books and courses to do that. You see, any fool can make things complicated, my goal is to keep it simple! Go to the site map to see all site content listed by subject area.

The site map lists extensive information on project management. To find what you are looking for, use the Search My Site link on the left of each page to reach the Google search panel.

Checklists aka "Issacons©"

Issacons stands for Issues and Considerations and are sets of slides providing summary information responding to a specific question associated with a particular project management topic.

Designed to save hours of searching when all you want is a simple checklist, they provide the reader with succinct information. Issacons are more detailed than a plain bulleted list.

To view slides as text, click the "A" button on the right side of the slides.
